Freedom is priceless.: Why Pro-Caps should support Personhood for dolphins.
When people say dolphins should be granted personhood, admittedly, a lot of people only think about how it would affect captivity, and perhaps seeing them in the wild. If dolphins were to be given inalienable rights, keeping them in tanks would be recognised as cruel and inhumane. I can understand why this would be met with resistance though. A lot of people visit marine parks often. They interact with the same dolphins every time. They’ve grown up there, seeing the same orcas and playing with the same beluga. It would be hard to let them go.
But I think there’s something more important to personhood that should unite us all in support of it. And that’s far, FAR greater protection of cetaceans in the wild, from the small Maui dolphin to the large, cunning orca; from the beluga to the Bottlenose.
If cetaceans were granted personhood - it would be morally and ethically wrong to slaughter, or cause harm to, these amazing animals.
And I genuinely believe that if we all care about dolphins as much as we say we do, then we should be willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of every cetacean species.
We should be willing to sacrifice captivity to protect them in the wild.
